Predictors of Drug Abuse and Relapse among Ethnic Minorities in Hong Kong: A Prospective Longitudinal Study

This project aims at (i) identifying the trends, patterns, and characteristics of ethnic minority drug abusers, with particular emphasis on potential generational differences regarding the frequency, types and patterns of drug abuse, and reasons for using drugs between young and older ethnic minorities; (ii) examining demographic, psychological and structural predictors of drug abuse and relapse in a 12-month interval among drug abusers who are ethnic minorities; and (iii) examining awareness, perceived facilitators and obstacles of utilising substance abuse rehabilitation services among drug-abusing ethnic minorities and their service needs.
The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Acute Toxicity Related to Recreational Drug Abuse Presenting to the Emergency Departments

This project aims at (i) characterising the trends and patterns of acute toxicity related to cannabis, amphetamines, cocaine, heroin and ketamine abuse presenting to accident & emergency departments (A&EDs) in Hong Kong during the COVID-19 pandemic; and (ii) evaluating the practice of A&ED interventions, including psychosocial intervention, and referral to substance abuse services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This project aims at combating trafficking of drugs into Hong Kong and preventing drug-related crimes within specific groups, i.e. foreign domestic helpers (FDHs) and sex workers. Project elements include in-person and online educational workshops and outreaching services for FDHs and sex workers; dissemination of letters from inmates imprisoned with drug-related offences; and educational videos on Facebook and Instagram.
“Resisting Drugs, Staying Healthy” Training Program

This project aims at enhancing the resilience of young “freeters” (freelance or part time workers) aged 21-35 and “NEET” (people not in employment, education or training) outside school network against drugs and providing training to secondary and tertiary students to become anti-drug ambassadors, who will then be re-engaged to disseminate anti-drugs messages to secondary students from Band 3 schools and other high-risk youths outside school network. Project elements include providing training for young freeters and tertiary students on career life planning and sports-related vocational skills with anti-drug elements; providing physical fitness training to equip participants to become “Resisting Drugs, Staying Healthy Ambassadors”; and training to selected secondary students to become school ambassadors; and having all trained ambassadors to provide subsequent physical fitness training for Band 3 secondary students, young “NEET” and high-risk youths outside school network.
Hands-on Toxicology Science: STEM Education Anti-drugs Programme

The project aims at educating youngsters and public about the harmful effects of drugs through interactive Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning activities. Project elements include holding a series of STEM workshops which convey anti-drug messages to secondary students and their teachers through hands-on activities (e.g. experiments); training tertiary students to become young anti-drug ambassadors to assit in implementing the project; producing ready-to-use anti-drug STEM teaching kits for secondary school teachers to spread the anti-drug messages to other students; and holding an announcement conference to promote the use of STEM educational approach to secondary school teachers.

This project aims at enhancing self-confidence and self-efficacy of secondary students and general youths in Yuen Long (in particular Tin Shui Wai) and Tuen Mun districts; enriching their understanding of drug harms; and strengthening their capability against drug abuse in long run. Project element include augmented reality room escape games for secondary students, general public, general youths and drug rehabilitees in order to promote anti-drugs messages to the community.

This project aims at enhancing anti-drug attitude among secondary school students and their resilience through various outdoor programmes and community events, as well as disseminating anti-drug messages to the community in Lantau Island. Project elements include training for long-distanced cycling, dancing and swimming training for ethnic minority students; choir training; endurance running competition; and musical show for general public in Lantau Island and from other districts.

This project aims at strengthening awareness of the harmful effects of drug abuse, especially cannabis, among young people, high-risk youths and general public in Kwai Tsing district. Project elements include drug rehabilitees’ sharing; anti-drugs workshops/talks for tertiary students; interactive booth games; and anti-drug talks on harmful effects of cannabis targeting students.

This project aims at engaging and mobilising young film makers to produce high quality films to raise general public’s awareness about drug harms. Project elements include arrangement of sharing by drug rehabilitees to young film makers; organisation of professional training in creative filmmaking and scriptwriting with anti-drug education elements; arranging professional mentorship programme and film making workshops; and broadcast of movies in cinema, online platforms and roving movie sharing sessions.
